Surge irrigation utilizes a surge controller valve placed in the center of gated pipe. The valve works by oscillating water from one side of the valve to the opposite side at set durations, through the controller. The alterating water causes an intermittent wetting and soaking cycle which leads to a reduction in water intake. This reduces the amount of water required for irrigation, along with soil and nutrient loss. You set the cycle times and the valve does the rest!
All in all, surge valves help you save water, labor and fertilizer while increasing yields. Surge irrigation increases the rate of water advance down the furrow. It accomplishes this by producing an even wetting front along the furrow and even depth water penetration into the soil. Helping reduce deep percolation losses and tail water runoff.
